Hukanui Primary School Eco Classroom, Hamilton

This project commenced in July 2009 and was completed in January 2010. With a contract value of $209,000, the project was completed two weeks after planned completion due to last minute design changes by the client, and slightly below budget.

This project is a local school funded project, with no financial assistance from the Ministry of Education. Selecting a contractor through traditional tendering methods, on a Fixed Lump Sum Price basis, Marra was appointed Contractor for this “Green” School initiative.

Construction works were completed in January, with significant additional services provided to the school.  Marra regularly met with the students to discuss progress, make presentations, report on waste management progress and other construction related topics. Marra included a number of key tasks whereby the students were able to be involved on-site in the construction works. “Last minute” design changes postponed completion by two weeks, with no adverse or occupancy impact.

This project entailed the building of an eco-classroom which was designed to minimise the negative impacts on the environment through the use of innovative building design, building practices and building materials and required strict adherence to “green” principals.  It was the first of its kind in the North Island Region.
